Good, Bad and Ugly
Welcome to ISM University, a place which is good, bad and ugly. Good for the freshers
because they get freedom coupled with boundary-less brotherhood in first year.
Bad for the second years who see the war lines being drawn in the name of where
are you from? And ugly for the third years who fight the war- a war for an intangible
entity for an unclear motive.
This year again the war was fought, culminating in the election of the ISS body
of ISM. Again promises were made, as they have been made before and will be made
in the future. The body is basically meant to act as a bridge between the administration
and the students. Its most important function is to look into and solve the students
problems. After all, it is the body that comes to the rescue of any student getting
a year back or NFTE, or being allegedly involved in ragging. Full credit to the
body for that.
Yet, does it really fulfill all the students expectations? Think for once. When
did you last see a hostel prefect going to the hostel warden for problems like water
shortage (who can forget those early morning trips to other hostels?), LAN connectivity
or invasion of stray dogs in hostels? Issues like inadequate no. of seats in the
library, requirement of cycle stands, shortage of canteen space etc. still plague
the students. Any efforts in this regard would be wholeheartedly welcomed.
But, for that matter, how often have we approached our office bearers for help on
these problems -did you seek help from your hostel prefect when there was no water
in the hostels? It is tempting to pin the blame on the elected few but isnt it
the collective responsibility of us all? Dont we all live in a perpetual hope that
the problems will be solved by themselves or that we will just learn to live with
them? The ISS follows a set pattern (Basant, Srijan etc.), but then, dont we expect
it to?
Much has been done, perhaps, for solving students problems, but there is still
a lot to be done. At this point, it is hoped that the newly elected ISS body realizes
the onerous task that lies ahead of it. Even more importantly, the need of the hour
is for the students to wake up and exercise their rights before expecting the body
to fulfill its duties.
